Item 3 - Update on SJRWMD Lands Assessment The St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) is preparing a Lands Assessment Project to assess the District’s land inventory acquired over the last 35 years. The objectives of the assessment are: (1) to determine if there are properties owned by the agency which are no longer needed; and (2) to investigate whether alternative uses of some properties may be appropriate which could generate revenue for land management purposes or reduce land management costs. The SJRWMD staff has identified two properties, currently owned by the District, that may no longer be needed. It is the intent of the District that these two properties (a 300-acre portion of Jennings State Forest and a 750-acre portion of the Bayard tract) be swapped for properties that have higher conservation values (wetlands, floodplains, strategic habitat, etc) . The District is also considering an alternative use for a third property (Belmore State Forest). For this property, the District intends to recommend that a conservation easement be placed on the property. This would allow the property to be timbered under certain guidelines. On October 8th, the SJRWMD staff will make a presentation to their Project & Lands Committee. Public meetings will occur between October and November. The final plan is anticipated to presented to the Governing Board in December.
